What tests are performed at Hove Skin Clinic?

Skin prick tests detect allergies related to diet or anything inhaled that can potentially cause sneezing, asthma, hives or eczema. We can test to over 200 allergens by skin prick testing looking for food allergies, nut allergy, pollen allergy and animal allergies. After a consultation with a specialist, allergens are selected for testing. The specialist nurse will then scratch the surface of the forearms and apply the allergen. We then have to wait 20-30 minutes to look for a visible skin reaction described as a wheal. This process typically takes about an hour.

Patch tests are only helpful to investigate allergies which are due to direct skin contact with substances outside the body. These include metals, perfumes, rubber, colophony in sticking plaster, and preservatives found in many cosmetics, shampoos, shaving foams and creams. Testing involves three visits to the clinic:

First Visit - Application of the Tests on the Back
On the first visit the specialist nurse will apply the allergens under a special tape across the whole back. The allergens are applied in aluminium Finn chambers and left in place 48-hours. During this time you will be unable to wash or shower.

Second Visit - Reading and Skin Re-Marking
The patches are removed and the skin marked at the site of original application. We take a reading of the skin reaction at this visit to look for irritant and allergic reactions.

Third Visit- Final Reading
The skin specialist will assess the skin and determine whether there have been any positive reactions. Information sheets will be provided about any detected allergies.

What does testing cost?
We typically charge £120 to £200 for skin prick and patch-testing. Insurance companies will normally reimburse the costs of investigation if you have private medical insurance.
